NGAN LOK / WINTER
Em and Mr Ren, the proprietors, were
a constant source of inspiration.
Across China, their lifestyles are
highly followed and admired. They had
established a very loyal client base and
a clear distinction between their brands
and lines. As a result, finding a focus
for their luxury line felt effortless.

I designed from my studio in East London and delivered weekly presentations to China. I would fly to Shenzhen for research and buying trips, to understand the market and establish supply chains. When creating the collections, I would stay for longer to manage the in-house sampling floor. The pattern cutters worked with high tech cutting software and large-scale print beds, enabling an incredible efficiency. They were equally as capable with more traditional craft techniques, and their draping and paper patterns were sensitive and delicate. Their ability to switch between the digital and the analogue was impressive; allowing for flexibility in my approach to the toiling process, and enriching the final product.
Winter collections had to cater for a broad range of climates, tastes, and attitudes across China. The range was planned carefully, cuts and fabrications were discussed at length, and textiles were bold and expressive. Em favoured intense variation and detail. We had a rapport, it was effortless.
I continue to work with a range of clients across China and I am represented for brand consultancy work by Kingsing Consultants, Beijing.
